U2 Tickets: How They Began
Today U2 have been one of the biggest bands on the planet for 20-30 years, and so when you're buying U2 tickets it's hard to imagine that there was a time when they weren't famous. But in fact, U2 had relatively humble beginnings in their home city of Dublin.
The year was 1976 when drummer Larry Mullen posted a note on the notice board at his high school saying that he was seeking musicians with whom to form a band. The three other current members responded to the note, as did Dik Evans (brother of Dave Evans, a.k.a. The Edge). Two friends of Mullen's, Peter Martin and Ivan McCormick, were also a part of the group. For a very short time was known as the 'Larry Mullen Band', but Mullen has admitted that his chances of leading the band evaporated as soon as Bono showed up to band practice, such was his charisma.
In actual fact, the other band members also quickly realized that Bono didn't have much in the way of musical talent, being unable to play an instrument or to sing well. He played guitar for a while, but by his own admission he was terrible at it, and eventually the other band members asked him just to sing instead. What saved Bono was his energy, which was to become a key reason for their success.
After the band formed they quickly renamed themselves 'Feedback'. Of the people attending their first band practice, Mullen's two friends Martin and McCormick soon left. The band played as a five-piece for a while as 'The Hype', but Dik Evans, being older, was becoming a 'fifth wheel', and the other members wanted to continue as a four-piece. Dik Evans left the band in early 1978. It was after the band became just the four current members that they changed their name a third and final time, to 'U2'.
The big breakthrough for U2 came in 1978 when they played in, and won, a talent competition in Limerick. This gave the band affirmation that they needed, and showed that their collaboration was something that was worth continuing with. Talking about this early success, the band members have since reflected that they beat other bands with more musical ability because of their energy – validating the choice of Bono as front man from then on.
The 1978 success led to a demo recording and the signing of a manager. A few years later, in 1980, the band recorded their debut album, Boy, which was well received, especially the track (and later single) 'I Will Follow'. Around this time the band began to garner a reputation as a good live act, with Bono as the charismatic, passionate front man. Though still unpolished, it was starting to become obvious that U2 were a band of immense potential.
It was the album War, released in 1983, that really represented the breakthrough for U2 as a major rock act. This album, though totally at odds with the 'synth-pop' that was popular at the time, debuted at No.1 in the United Kingdom, even more importantly, produced a single ('New Year's Day') that was the band's first hit record outside of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
And the rest, as they say, is history. From humble beginnings as a high school band with questionable musical ability, U2 have morphed into what some say is the second-biggest band of all time (behind, of course, The Beatles). When you buy U2 tickets, you're buying a chance to experience for yourself what it takes to claim that title.
