U2 Tickets: 4 Facts You Didn't Know About U2
Shopping for U2 tickets? So you're a big U2 fan? Test yourself to see how big of a fan you really are, with these 4 facts you didn't know about the Irish supergroup:
#1 They met in high school
Like The Beatles, U2 members met when they were still in high school, which if nothing else has given them a long time to get things right! In fact, the critical thing that led to the formation of the Irish band was Larry Mullen Jr. putting up a notice at school saying that he was a drummer looking for musicians to form a band with. The rest of the band (along with some others who dropped out along the way) replied, and the rest is history.
#2 They ain't exactly 'rock n roll'
In contrast with the lifestyles that one more commonly associates with rock stars, Bono met his future wife, Alison Hewson (then Stewart), at the age of 15, and they are still together. Drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. has lived with his long-time partner Ann Acheson for 20+ years, while guitarist The Edge, like Bono, also married his high school sweetheart (though they later divorced). He has since remarried. Only Adam Clayton is currently a bachelor, and further upping his rock n roll credibility, he also had a brief relationship and engagement with a supermodel (Naomi Campbell) in the early 1990s.
#3 They nearly broke up way back in 1990
Imagine if U2 had broken up in 1990: no Achtung Baby; no Zooropa; no All That You Can't Leave Behind, and no Bono in weird sunglasses campaigning for third-world debt relief. No doubt the face of popular music would look very, very different today. Thankfully, it didn't happen, but it was close!
The year was 1990 and the band was recording the album Achtung Baby in what was still at that time East Berlin. Perhaps as a result of criticism levelled at their last album, Rattle and Hum, the band was seeking to make changes to their sound by incorporating more diverse musical influences. This led to conflict and tension within the band, and almost saw the band members going their separate ways. What stopped it from happening? Their best-ever song, 'One' – joining together to collaborate on this improvised hit helped to convince the members that the band was something that was worth persevering with.
#4 Bono got his nickname from a hearing aid shop
While he growing up in Dublin, the singer, born Paul David Hewson, was a member of a surrealist gang that called themselves 'Lypton Village'. The gang was renowned for giving each other strange nicknames, and Bono had more than one. 'Bono' came from a shop that sold hearing aids in Dublin's Talbot Street called 'Bonavox', which means 'good voice' in Italian. The story goes that Bono and a friend often walked past this shop, and his friend gave him the nickname 'Bono Vox' because the young Paul Hewson sang so loud it was like he was singing for the deaf!
