U2 Tickets: Best Lyrics
There's no doubt that Bono is one of the best lyric writers living today, and over the years he has penned hit after hit with memorable lyrics. When you buy U2 tickets, you're buying a chance to hear some of the following hit lyrics live in concert:
#1 'Sunday Bloody Sunday'
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
'Cause tonight
We can be as one, tonight.
Tonight.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Appearing on the 1983 album, War, the iconic lyrics of 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' concerns the 'Bloody Sunday' incident in Ireland where 13 demonstrators were shot and killed by British troops. The lyrics asked 'how long' the violence in Northern Ireland would go on, and by extension, how long armed violence and war will go on anywhere in the world. It preaches that we can be 'as one', (i.e. at peace), and as such the lyrics are strongly anti-war without being partisan.
#2 'One'
One love, one blood
One life, you got to do what you should
One life with each other: sisters, brothers
One life, but we're not the same
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
'One' was released on U2's 1991 album Achtung Baby. The lyrics were inspired in part by a note that Bono sent to the Dalai Lama which included the phrase 'One – but not the same'. The lyrics are about the necessity of getting along with each other even though we are all different. Coming at a difficult time in the band's history, they also concern breaking up, whether of a relationship or (one suspects) of a band.
#3 'Until the End of the World'
Haven't seen you in quite a while
I was down the hold just passing time
Last time we met was a low-lit room
We were as close together as a bride and groom
We ate the food, we drank the wine
Everybody having a good time
Except you
You were talking about the end of the world
Like many of U2's songs, 'Until the End of the World' has strong religious overtones. The song describes a conversation between Jesus and Judas Iscariot, and the lyrics quoted above concern the Last Supper ('we ate the food, we drank the wine'). That notwithstanding, and typically for U2, the lyrics are broad enough that they wouldn't necessarily be recognized as religious by the average fan.
#4 'Beautiful Day'
The heart is a bloom, shoots up through the stony ground
There's no room, no space to rent in this town
You're out of luck and the reason that you had to care,
The traffic is stuck and you're not moving anywhere.
You thought you'd found a friend to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace
It's a beautiful day, the sky falls
And you feel like it's a beautiful day
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
From the 2000 album All That You Can't Leave Behind, 'Beautiful Day' concerns a man who has lost everything but is still able to appreciate what he has left. The lyrics are about recognizing that you have nothing, but being able to find joy in the 'beautiful day' of the title. As such it is one of U2's most optimistic songs, a recognition that even at the darkest hour of a person's life there is hope to be found in simple things.
